Therma-Tru Door Installation: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
Therma-Tru door installation in Fort Worth typically runs $450 to $1,900 installed, depending on whether we’re hanging a new slab, replacing a frame, or doing a full system swap with sidelights. We keep Therma-Tru-compatible hinge kits, sweeps, thresholds, and weatherstripping on the truck, so most jobs are done in a single visit once we confirm your model. The call usually starts the same way: the door won’t latch, it’s dragging on the threshold, or a gap has opened at the top corner. Texas heat does a number on door frames, and Fort Worth’s clay soil shifting under the slab doesn’t help. Sean Mackey and our crew have seen every variation of it across Tarrant County.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To
We install and service the full Therma-Tru lineup sold in North Texas: Smooth-Star, Classic-Craft, Pulse, Fiber-Classic, and Benchmark. The compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know is that Therma-Tru slabs are matched to specific frame systems, and you can’t always drop a Smooth-Star slab into a Classic-Craft frame without shimming the hinges differently. The hinge prep locations differ by series. That’s the kind of thing you only learn by doing it.
If you’re not sure what you have, check the hinge edge of the slab. Therma-Tru stamps the series name there on most models made after 2005. The rough opening width matters too: Fort Worth homes built in the 90s often have 30-inch rough openings, while newer builds in Walsh or Ventana run 32 or 36 inches. We measure on site before ordering anything. On the OEM question, Therma-Tru’s own weatherstripping and adjustable sill caps are genuinely better than most aftermarket options, but a good quality generic hinge kit works fine on the Smooth-Star and Fiber-Classic lines. We’ll tell you which way we’d go for your specific door and why.
Signs Your Therma-Tru Door Installation Is Failing
- Door drags on the threshold or won’t latch. The slab has settled, or the frame has racked. In Fort Worth, slab movement from our expanding and contracting clay soil is the usual cause. We can often correct this by adjusting the sill cap and re-shimming the hinges without replacing the whole unit.
- Light visible through the top or latch-side corner. The weatherstripping has compressed or the frame has pulled away from the rough opening. This is where your cooling dollars leak out every July.
- Sweep is torn or missing at the bottom. The door sweep takes the most abuse on a Therma-Tru, especially if the slab has settled even a quarter inch. A missing sweep lets dust, pests, and Texas heat pour in.
- Hinges feel loose or the door sags toward the latch side. The screw holes in the jamb have stripped. On fiberglass and composite frames, this is common after five-plus years. We re-drill, plug, and re-anchor the hinges rather than slapping in longer screws that crack the jamb.
- Drafts or condensation between the frame and the rough opening. The original install didn’t get insulated or sealed properly. We see this a lot on production-built Fort Worth homes where the door was hung fast and the perimeter gaps were never foamed.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Therma-Tru door installation runs in Fort Worth right now:
- New slab install (existing frame intact): $450 – $850
- Full pre-hung unit replacement (entry door, standard size): $900 – $1,500
- Pre-hung unit with one sidelight: $1,400 – $2,100
- Weatherstripping, sweep, and threshold replacement: $150 – $350
- Frame repair and re-anchoring: $200 – $500
Every price includes parts, labor, disposal of the old unit, and a written line-item quote before we start. No change orders, no “we found something” upcharge at the door. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation for a full year, parts and labor, in writing. If something isn’t right, we fix it. Get the numbers right up front, and the install takes care of itself.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check three things yourself: whether the hinges are tight, whether the sweep is torn, and whether the slab is visibly out of square in the frame. That’s diagnosis, not repair. Where DIY goes wrong on Therma-Tru doors is adjusting the sill cap without the right shims, or trying to plane a fiberglass slab, which ruins the edge and voids the manufacturer warranty. Fiberglass doesn’t plane like wood. One wrong pass and you’re buying a new slab. If the frame has shifted or the hinges are stripped, call us at (682) 354-9300. We’ll quote it, show you the number, and you decide.
FAQs
A slab swap on an existing frame takes two to three hours. A full pre-hung unit with frame removal and reinstallation runs half a day. If we’re adding a sidelight or repairing a racked rough opening, plan for a full day.
Usually yes. If the slab itself is solid, we can re-anchor hinges, reset the sill, and replace weatherstripping for a fraction of replacement cost. We only recommend a new unit when the frame is rotted, cracked, or so far out of square that shimming won’t hold.
We carry Therma-Tru-compatible hinge kits, sweeps, thresholds, and weatherstripping for the common Fort Worth models. We also stock parts for the other brands we install: PGT, CGI, CWS, ECO Window Systems, Mr-Glass, ES Windows, and ViewLux. If your part isn’t on the truck, we order it and schedule the swap as soon as it lands.
No. You get a written, line-item price before anything starts, and that’s the price. If we open the frame and find something structural the quote didn’t anticipate, we stop, show you, and get your sign-off before proceeding. No surprise invoice at the end.
